Welcome to the Soundmark Virtual Interview for the artwork "Tales from the Infra-Thin" being developed by Glynis Rigsby and Edmund Mooney for the exhibition, "Welcome to Wherever You Are", on view from June 6 to July 27, 2025 at the Manly Art Gallery & Museum.
Please answer as many of the questions below as you are comfortable responding to or that apply to your experience. We would be delighted to credit you should you for your input. If you would like to provide us with additional information, you are welcome to do so.
To give you a sense of the origin of these questions and the thrust of this piece, here are some definitions and concepts to think about:
Infra-thin, a concept developed by Marcel Duchamp, which was defined as “an absent presence”, a residue of presence that marks and actualizes the difference between what has been and what persists. The infrathin of a sound is situated at the divergence between the sound and what remains of it, that is to say its trace. (or in this case it’s memory.) -- from The Order of Sounds, Francoisse Bonnet.
Anemnesis, An effect of reminiscence in which a past situation or atmosphere is brought back to the listener’s consciousness, provoked by a particular signal or sonic context…often involuntary revival of memory caused by listening and the evocative power of sounds, Phonemnesis is the act of recalling a sound from memory. Remanence is a continuation of a sound that is no longer heard -- from Sonic Experience, A Guide to Every Day Sounds, Jean Francois Augoyard and Henry Torgue
Soundmark, “the term is derived from landmark to refer to a community sound which is unique or possesses qualities which make it specially regarded or noticed by people in that community.” (for this purpose we would substitute the word “home” for community.) -- from The Tuning of the World by R. Murray Schaeffer
